ASSOCIATION BY-LAWS

The WYHA by-laws serve as the association's governing guidelines and foundation for the program. The WHYA program's purpose is to promote, sponsor, provide facilities for, and organize a program dedicated to recreation, sportsmanship, and excellence in hockey for youth in school district #284 in order to make them better citizens. The by-laws can be viewed on the link below.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MONTHLY MEETING

The WYHA Board of Directors meet monthly on the first Monday to review business updates and align on key decisions.

The BOD monthly minutes are archived here.

INTERESTED IN GETTING INVOLVED?

The WYHA Board of Directors are elected annually in May and serve 3 year terms. In the spring time, a call for interested parties will be sent to the association. For more information on the BOD you can reference the By-Laws. If you are interested in learning more about serving on the Board or in a Coordinator position please reach out to Contact@WayzataHockey.org.

Additionally there are many roles that support the association outside of the BOD and we welcome those interested in sharing their skillset to help our program. Most of the leadership positions are filled by parents/guardians of players who are first and foremost passionate about the program and their skaters experience and willing to share their time and unique skills with the association.

If you see an area that could benefit from your organization, management or leadership please reach out.

DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY OPERATIONS

The WYHA Director of Hockey Operations will work closely with the Board to establish and execute a comprehensive hockey program with an emphasis on player development and a singular goal of providing the best hockey experience for all WYHA players and families.

WYHA is one of the largest youth hockey associations in the entire country. Over the years, the task of overseeing tryouts, recruiting and supporting non-parent coaches, monitoring, providing feedback and practice plan guidance to parent coaches, and establishing and overseeing a consistent, thorough skills development program has become too large for volunteers to handle by themselves. Our expectation is that by bringing on a full-time Director of Hockey Operations the result will be a much better experience for our players and families at all levels of play.

After a thorough interview and evaluation process, we’re excited to announce Miles Death as our new Director of Hockey Operations!

Miles has been with WYHA since his mite hockey days. He is currently an assistant coach on the Wayzata High School staff and works year-round in hockey skill development for Wayzata Hockey Clinics, Minnesota Lakers, Individual Skills Clinics, and several other youth associations around the Twin Cities.

Since beginning his coaching career in 2016 with the Wayzata Squirt A’s, Miles has worked with players at all levels and developed a coaching philosophy based on individual skill development and introducing hockey concepts at a young age. He’s thrilled to bring his love for hockey back to his alma mater Wayzata, and continue working with many of the coaches who shaped his own playing career.

Outside of coaching, Miles enjoys playing golf, hiking with his dog, and doing various projects around the house. Miles has a B.S. in Mathematics from The University of South Dakota where he was a four-year member of the Men’s Golf Team.

MEET THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Jaclyn Hill

I am proud to serve as the new President of the Wayzata Youth Hockey Association for the 2024-2025 season. I was first elected to the WYHA’s Board of Directors in Spring 2023 and spent my first year serving as the Association’s point-of-contact for all things ice scheduling. I will be continuing this role and doing my best to wear both President and Ice Scheduler hats with the goal to create a vibrant and supportive environment for all players and parents. My involvement in hockey stems from my two boys – avid participants in hockey at the Mite (now Squirt) and Jr Gold levels. My husband, Bobby, is now entering his 20th year coaching, making me both a long-standing hockey mom and coach's wife. As a result, my involvement here at WYHA was a foregone conclusion. Originally from New Jersey, my family relocated to Minnesota in January 2020. Our integration into this amazing community was a natural fit, given our family’s enthusiasm and the passion for the game we all share with you. Please find me during the season and let’s discuss how we can partner together to make the Wayzata Youth Hockey Association the preeminent youth hockey organization in the State of Hockey.

Nicholas Cook

I’ve been a WYHA board member since Spring 2019 and have a Bantam player and a Squirt goalie. When I decided to run for a board position, I was looking for an opportunity to positively contribute to the organization as both of my sons were either involved or starting to get interested in playing hockey. It’s been a rewarding experience to understand and refine the work that goes into creating the environment for our players and, ultimately, provide them opportunities to grow as hockey players and as teammates.

Michelle Ugurlu

While not growing up in the “State of Hockey” and having little experience with what that means, we are now all in. I have two boys that play – a 1st year Advanced Mite and a 1st year PeeWee. From the minute my older son said he met a new friend in Kindergarten, “and he plays hockey!”, I knew this was going to be an adventure. I’ve enjoyed the hockey community that WYHA has created and am so glad to be a part of the organization. Being on the board has offered me a way to be involved in something deeply rooted in our community. I love working with the mite program – it’s exciting to see their big smiles when they learn something new and transitioning to working together as a team. I am currently serving as the Vice President of Administration and the Mite Director for the 2024-2025 season.

Mark Lavender

I’ve been a board member since 2019 and I have 4 kids playing hockey. They have all benefited greatly from this wonderful sport and I wanted to give back to the organization that has been so generous to my family. I believe that youth sports, and hockey in particular, provide for outstanding personal athletic, social and individual skill development. Ultimately, while helping each child improve as a hockey player is a goal, it is ancillary to what I view as the primary objective of helping each person develop life skills and grow individually and in the community. I am thrilled to be a part of the association and on top of my general board duties, I help out as the Goalie Development Director, working to ensure that we bring new goalies aboard and develop those that have already committed to the position.

Ryan Foltz

I have been coaching at Wayzata since both of my kids started playing and now have a 15U and 1st year PeeWee. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience watching my own kids develop in a sport I love to watch and play but also rewarding to build friendships with other players, coaches and families. Hockey really is a community sport and could not happen without the support our kids get from the amazing amount of volunteers that make it all happen. I joined the board to have a better understanding of the behind the scenes aspects that help make WYHA an amazing place to develop kids and play hockey. Last year I was elected as the VP of Girls Travel hockey and am excited to advance our Girls Hockey. I look forward to helping grow Wayzata Hockey and the good name that WYHA brings to the sport. Go Trojans!

Christian Peterson

I have been on the WYHA Board for six years, including being on the Executive Committee for the last three. Prior to joining the Board, I was the Mite Director for five years and I coached both of my sons (currently a second-year bantam and a junior in high school) for over 10 years. I have been watching, playing or coaching hockey since I was 4 years old and can’t think of a better way to repay all of the cherished memories and experiences in a lifetime of hockey than to give back by volunteering to support the sport I love in a fantastic community of dedicated parents and players. Please take a moment to thank all of the WYHA Board members if you see them around the rink - we have a group of incredibly dedicated people who work tirelessly to ensure our Association functions the way it should.

Andy Nordseth

I have served on the WYHA Board for the past four years, as well as the District 3 Board, representing WYHA. My current duties consist of acting as a liaison between WYHA and District 3 on all hockey matters. I am a parent of two WYHA players, one currently entering 2nd year Bantams and the other is now a High School graduate, both started in WYHA as mini mites. I live in Plymouth with my wife Laurie and work as a civil engineer.

Ben Norton

I have been in and around hockey since I was 3 years old. I grew up in MN and played hockey here through college. My family was part of my youths’ program/board for many years and I played against WYHA growing up and always envied their very large yet well-run program. I continue to play hockey myself and have never stop having a love for the game. I want nothing more than to give back to my kids and many others what I spent a large part of my life developing. I have 3 girls in the program ranging from ages 7 – 14 and watching them cultivate year in and year out is what it’s all about. I want to thank all the families that are part of this program…nothing can be accomplished without their dedication and commitment to the game we all cherish so much.

Becky Draper

Our children started playing in the WYHA in 2018, and I have enjoyed coaching both my daughter and son during this time. I am grateful for the positive impact the WYHA has had on our family through the years. I am eager to give back to the community and help support the growth and development of our young athletes. The youth hockey program's greatest strengths are the dedicated families and volunteers, who work together to create an association and environment where our children not only learn to love the game of hockey but also develop valuable life skills, forge enduring friendships, enhance mental well-being, and increase confidence and self-esteem. Thank you all for creating an amazing youth hockey association and I am thankful to be elected to the board, representing families best interests.

LINDSEY EMERY

I joined the WYHA board in spring in 2024. I have three children. My youngest son isn’t quite old enough for hockey, my middle son will be an advanced Mite, and my daughter will be first year 12u this next season. We came from another association at the beginning of last season and had a great experience with WYHA. I lived and breathed hockey growing up and played on the Blake Varsity team for five years, and was the starting goaltender for four of those years. I went on to play for Niagara University Women’s division 1 team 2001-2003. I am excited to see what all we can accomplish in the years to come for youth hockey!

CHRISTIE WEEG

I have been part of the WYHA community since moving to the area in 2018. My son, now a goalie, will be playing Bantam level this fall. As my investment in hockey and WYHA has grown over the years, I have found myself thinking “I wish I could do more” for the organization that is such a huge part of my family’s life. I am passionate about character development and having fun just as much as I am passionate about athletic development and competition. WYHA offers all of these things to athletes and families. Elected to the board for a 3 year term, I want to contribute to the success of the Association so it remains a sought after and reputable organization for years to come.

GINA CARBO

Growing up in northern MN I learned to love hockey traveling weekends and spending countless hours in cold arenas watching my two brothers. Unfortunately, there was no girls hockey but I did a lot of pick up games at the outdoor rinks. I have one son playing at the PeeWee level and a younger son that plays basketball (hoping he gives hockey a 2nd chance this coming season). I truly believe sports offer so many growth opportunities and invaluable lessons learned to our youth. In my first year on the board I look forward to learning how such a large and amazing organization operates and to invest more of my time to help out in this fun hockey community.
